BSC Update: Back to Montgomery

BSC Update: Back to Montgomery

For Immediate Release
Jan. 29, 2024

AdmissionsSeal.jpgAs the January Exploration Term winds down and spring term ramps up, BSC is getting ready to go back to the Alabama Legislature.

After months of delays and a deeply disappointing denial, we are working closely with our Montgomery allies again on a rewrite of the bill that was designed to provide the bridge funding BSC needs to complete our campaign for long-term stability.

Last year’s successful passage of SB278 would not have been possible without the tidal wave of calls, emails, postcards, letters, and personal visits legislators received from voters in their districts.

BSC alumni, parents, and students made their voices heard, and it made a huge difference. And so we must do it again.

The legislative session begins on Tuesday, Feb. 6, Between now and then, our Alabama-based alumni and parents will receive an email with contact information for your specific legislators, as well as key messaging points for a second wave of outreach.

If you don’t have that message from us by end of the day Wednesday, Jan. 31, please email us at [email protected] with your email address and home address so we can reply with the information that will help you advocate effectively for the College.

Students, when you return next week, we will also ask you to reach out, too, and will have the information you need to do so.

If you live outside of Alabama, we encourage you to think about people you know who do live (and vote) here and ask them to contact their legislators to ask for their support. They can find their state Senator and Representative here.

Last year at this time, we were given a 5 percent chance of getting a bill passed. Thanks to our legislative champions and to everyone who helped make the case for BSC as a critical asset to Alabama, we succeeded with overwhelming bipartisan support.

This time, that case is even stronger – because even during this last hard and uncertain year, our alumni kept up the drumbeat while increasing their financial contributions year over year. Our students kept their focus in the classroom and on the playing field. Our faculty and staff delivered what those students came here for: A stellar liberal arts education that will prepare them to make the world a better place.

While we will work hard to get this done – again – we will work even harder to keep students as our top priority. We look forward to having them all back – and to the safe return of those who traveled abroad during E-Term for what has no doubt been a peak experience of their BSC years.

We will continue to keep you updated.

Forward, Ever!
